A small-business owner weighing up Gorgias vs Zendesk while taking notes at a laptop

Two tools, two very different bets. Gorgias bets your support lives inside a Shopify store. Zendesk bets your support spans several teams and a few thousand tickets a month. Plenty of small businesses are neither, which is why the Gorgias vs Zendesk question so often ends in a free trial nobody finishes. Here is the honest version, including the part where the right answer is to buy neither.

The short answer

  • Pick Gorgias if you run a Shopify store and want the order record sitting inside the ticket.
  • Pick Zendesk if support, sales and an IT desk all touch the same conversation.
  • Gorgias bills by ticket volume. Zendesk bills by agent seat. The two prices cannot be compared line for line.
  • Both meter their answering bot per resolution, so a busy month costs more on either one.

What the Gorgias vs Zendesk choice really comes down to

Most comparison articles run forty feature rows. You don't need them. Two questions decide this one, and everything else is detail.

First: where does your customer's context live? If an agent can't answer "where's my order" without the order sitting in front of them, and that order lives in Shopify, then native access to it beats any feature count. That is Gorgias's entire design.

Second: how many teams touch a single conversation? One support pod is a different problem from support plus sales plus an IT desk plus a regional office. Zendesk exists for the second one.

Answer both and you usually have your winner. Shopify plus one team points at Gorgias. Lots of systems plus several teams points at Zendesk. No Shopify and one team is the case both tools handle worst, and it's the most common shape among the businesses we talk to.

The pricing models don't line up

This is where most Gorgias vs Zendesk comparisons quietly mislead people, because the two vendors bill on completely different units. One counts tickets. The other counts humans.

Gorgias charges for tickets. Prices verified September 2026 at monthly billing, with annual billing running about 16 percent cheaper:

Go past your allowance and each extra ticket costs roughly $0.32 to $0.40. The AI Agent is a separate add-on at about $0.90 per resolved conversation on annual billing, or $1.00 monthly, and that resolution also counts against your ticket allowance. An automated answer gets billed on both meters at once.

Zendesk charges for seats. Prices verified September 2026, billed annually:

Add-ons stack on top, priced per agent per month: an AI bundle around $50, workforce management around $50, a contact-centre voice bundle around $83. Automated resolutions are billed separately again, and Zendesk doesn't publish a rate for them. Check both vendor sites before you sign anything, because both change plans often.

The rule of thumb nobody prints

Don't compare the plans. Price your own shape on both, and watch the answer flip.

A five-person team handling 400 conversations a month pays Gorgias about $50 on annual Basic, and Zendesk $275 for five Suite Team seats. Gorgias wins by a mile.

A one-person shop handling 1,500 conversations pays Gorgias about $300 on annual Pro, and Zendesk $55 for one Suite Team seat. Zendesk wins by a mile.

Same two products, opposite verdicts, and neither result has anything to do with features. Gorgias gets cheaper as your tickets-per-person figure falls. Zendesk gets cheaper as it rises. You'll find posts claiming a three-person team on 1,800 tickets "pays one Gorgias Pro plan at $300 versus three or more Zendesk seats," as though $300 were the bargain. Three Suite Team seats is $165. Run your own numbers, on your own volume, before you trust anyone's verdict.

What Gorgias does better

Give Gorgias its due. For a Shopify store it does things Zendesk simply doesn't.

The trial is seven days, so book the time before you start it. If Gorgias is on your shortlist, our Gorgias comparison page lays out where a flat-rate tool costs less and where it doesn't.

What Zendesk does better

Zendesk earned its market position honestly. It's the more capable platform in almost every direction that isn't Shopify.

The depth is also the cost. An independent review praises the admin controls and the setup experience, and that's the trade: more to configure, more you can configure. The trial is 14 days. Our Zendesk comparison page has the side-by-side.

Where the Gorgias vs Zendesk choice goes wrong for small teams

Here's the part the vendor pages leave out. Both tools are aimed at a shape that most small businesses don't have, and the mismatch shows up in four places.

The cheap Zendesk tier isn't the real product. Support Team at $19 is email ticketing. Chat, messaging and a help center start at $55 a seat. Three people is $165 a month before a single automated answer.

Gorgias without Shopify loses most of its point. Strip out the native order data and you're paying by ticket volume for a general help desk, which is the worst version of the deal.

Your quiet months subsidise nothing. Ticket meters and per-resolution fees mean your bill is lowest in the month you least need the tool, and highest in the month a product goes viral or a shipment goes missing. We wrote a whole piece on why per-resolution pricing punishes exactly the businesses it claims to help.

Setup is a real cost. An enterprise Zendesk rollout is a project with a timeline. If nobody on your team owns that project, it doesn't get finished, and you pay for a year of a half-configured help desk.

What we built instead

We're not neutral here, so take this with the salt it deserves. SupportifyGPT exists for the shape neither of these tools is aimed at: one to ten people, a few hundred conversations a month, no Shopify store required, and no appetite for a bill that moves.

Pricing is $15, $39 or $79 a month by seat count, and every feature is on every plan, including the support bot. No per-resolution fee, no ticket overage, no setup fee. The bot works in two halves: rules search the articles you've already written, then a model writes the reply from those articles. If your articles don't cover the question it says so and hands the conversation to you rather than inventing a policy you never wrote. Anything it drafts for your help center is saved for you to approve before it goes live.

And the honest boundary: if you run a Shopify store doing 3,000 tickets a month, Gorgias is the better tool and we'd tell you that on a call. If you have three departments and an IT desk, buy Zendesk. We're the right answer for the middle, not for everybody. You can see how we stack up against both in all our comparison pages, or just start a free trial and find out in an afternoon.

How to pick in ten minutes

  1. Count last month's customer conversations. Email, chat, DMs, all of it.
  2. Count how many people will be answering them.
  3. Multiply your seat count by $55 for Zendesk Suite Team. Then find the Gorgias plan that covers your conversation count. Whichever number is smaller wins on price.
  4. Ask whether an agent needs the order record open to reply. If yes, and you're on Shopify, weight Gorgias heavily.
  5. Ask whether anyone outside support ever touches a ticket. If yes, weight Zendesk heavily.
  6. If both those answers are no, neither pricing model is built for you, and a flat per-seat tool will be cheaper and quicker to set up.

Ten minutes with a calculator beats an hour with a feature table. The feature lists overlap so heavily that price and fit decide it, and both of those you can work out yourself in an afternoon.
